VANCOUVER, Wash. (KOIN 6) — Main Street Marijuana got their Washington state retail pot license early Monday. The cannabis will arrive on Tuesday night in time for opening sales at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Retailers expect a crush of Oregonians coming across the border to buy the legal weed — but it’s only legal in Washington, and there are limitations.
Ramsey Hamide, the proprietor at Main Street Marijuana, said they learned during a trip to visit legal pot stores in Colorado that “60 to 70% of business comes from out of state.”
Stores like Main Street Marijuana will post signs and check IDs, since minors aren’t even allowed to go inside.
You must be 21, you can’t sample the pot inside the store, you can’t sample the pot outside the store. Vancouver police intend to ticket buyers outside stores if they start smoking before they get home.
You can buy up to an ounce of pot in Washington stores and consume it out of public view.
But it’s against Oregon law to take it back across the state line.
Neither the state patrols in Washington and Oregon said they will have any border checks or special enforcement. But if you’re stopped while driving — or even riding a bike – in Oregon, you could be ticketed for possession.
