PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A once-overweight Portland police horse lost 200 pounds and helped make his first arrest this week.

When Murphy the horse joined the PPB Mounted unit, he weighed 1900 pounds. He needed to lose weight before he could go on patrol.

He did.

Last week, Murphy — ridden by Officer Cassandra Wells, chased down a man suspected of breaking into a building in Old Town. He galloped about six blocks before cornering the suspect.

Murphy got a treat at the end of his shift, Wells said.
