MARION COUNTY, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A fatal attack from three pit bulls on a family’s pet could have potentially been prevented after they learned the same pit bulls killed another dog.
“She was like my kid. She went everywhere with me,” said Jennifer Chandlee of Salem about the loss of her lab mix, Elsie.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Jennifer Chandlee and her husband, Chris, were vacationing at Detroit Lake when the three dogs attacked and killed Elsie.
“They came out of nowhere – jumped right on top of her – had her head under water,” said Jennifer Chandlee.
The pit bulls’ owner, Kevin Berquist of Eagle Creek, was cited with a misdemeanor charge on Thursday but will be able to keep the dogs.
Chandlee questioned why animal control won’t take the pit bulls from Berquist, especially since her dog is the second one they have killed.
KOIN 6 questioned the Marion County Sheriff’s Office as to why the dogs remain with Berquist.
“They went in and the dogs were not a threat to anyone. They were contained. The dog was still alive and on the way to a hospital,” said Marion County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Chris Baldridge.
A phone call to Berquist for his side of the story on both attacks was not returned.
Meanwhile, the Chandlees said they fear the dogs that killed their pet and another can and will do it again.
“Just horrific and terrifying to see,” said Jennifer Chandlee.
