CORNELIUS, Ore. (KOIN 6) — The Cornelius Fire Department confirms that a 6-year-old fell out of a second story window Monday evening while he was being babysat.

Crews responded to the call just before 5 p.m. and found the babysitter outside her house with the child in an “altered level of consciousness” with an “obvious head wound.”

According to Matt Johnson with Forest Grove Fire and Rescue, the boy was playing hide-and-seek with the babysitter when he hid behind a bed. For some reason, he had his back against a window and fell backwards out of it.

Johnson could not say for sure if the boy landed on a concrete patio or on dirt and gravel. However, he said it appeared he fell about 12 to 15 feet.

The boy was transported via LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland with serious injuries.

His current condition was not known.

In Oregon, between 40 and 50 children fall out of windows each year, on average.
