Police: Officer killed crowbar-swinging suspect

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A robbery suspect who attacked Portland police officers with a crowbar was shot and killed Thursday morning.

Around 6 a.m., two PPB officers from the East Precinct went to the Springwater Corridor Trail at SE 104th Street and Foster Road after a reported armed robbery.

The officers talked with the victim and learned he was assaulted, and then began to look for the suspect on the Springwater Corridor Trail, authorities told KOIN 6 News.

He was found off the road and, authorities said, the suspect started fighting the officers without provocation.

During the fight the man attacked one of the officers with a crowbar and a struggle ensued. One of the officers fell to the ground during an attempt to disable him.

The suspect continued to swing the crowbar at the officer on the ground. The other officer fired and shot the man, who died at the scene.

The suspect’s name has not been released. An autopsy will be conducted.

The officers are on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation, standard procedure in similar incidents.
