LINCOLN CITY, Ore. (KOIN 6) — For 30 years, Carolyn Plummer has owned a company that rents Lincoln City homes to vacationers. But she’s worried there is a push to limit and perhaps cut back the number of future vacation rentals.
“It’s coming from the people who don’t want rentals in a residential zone,” she told KOIN 6 News.
She’s worried about efforts to limit where vacation properties are located and how many can be rented. More regulations, she said, could hurt not just her business but others, too.
A large group of vacation rental owners, local businesses and residents came up with some solutions to better manage short term rentals, she said. But an extensive study is being tossed aside by city leaders, she said.
One idea was to create Yes and No zones. A rental in a Yes zone would be available for unlimited term rentals, and a rental in a No zone would be limit how many days a year it could be rented.
City councilman Roger Sprague told KOIN 6 News he’s concerned about those proposed zones. The bigger issue, he said, is cracking down on people who own more than one vacation rental home. The current law states they are supposed to live in a rental half the time.
“We have a long ways to go yet,” he said, “if we’re even going to change anything.”
When asked if this issue will blow over, Plummer was succinct.
“No, I don’t.”
