KELSO, Wash. (KOIN 6) — Kelso City Councilman Jared Franklin, who has a criminal past and was recently arrested in connection with a hit-and-run, addressed fellow council members and residents Tuesday evening.
Franklin declined to comment on his recent arrest and criminal past prior to Tuesday’s city council meeting but did address the issues with one statement during the meeting.
“I’ve been clean for four years now. If you know someone who’s been affected by drugs and alcohol, that’s a big accomplishment,” said Franklin.
While some have called for his resignation in light of his recent arrest, others defended Franklin, who legally ran and wan a seat on Kelso’s City Council.
“I’ve known him for three years. [He’s an] astounding young man,” said one person.
For the alleged hit-and-run accident, Franklin spent one night in the Cowlitz County Jail and remains on the city council because the charges from that incident were only misdemeanors.
Franklin’s next court date is May 27.
