HILLSBORO, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Residents of an assisted living center were forced to take shelter Tuesday morning following a natural gas scare.

Workers digging a trench for a new water feature outside the facility broke a natural gas line around 6:45 a.m., according to Hillsboro Fire and Rescue officials.

One hundred senior residents and staff were engaged in a shelter-in-place response — shutting all building windows and ignition sources and retreating to the lobby at the opposite end of the center.

Northwest Natural Gas crews managed to clamp the burst line, and firefighters had cleared the scene and allowed residents back to their rooms by 8 a.m.
