NEWPORT, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A beeping sound that a person reported hearing from a park garbage can in Lincoln County on Tuesday turned out to be a discarded smoke detector, police said.

A citizen reported to a Lincoln County Deputy Sheriff that he heard a beeping sound coming from one of the public trash cans around 9:30 a.m. in Newport’s Don Davis Park. The park was immediately evacuated as police searched the trash can.

A residential smoke detector was discovered in the trash can as the source of the sound, police said.

During their investigation, officers learned that some park patrons had heard the sound for as many as four days prior without reporting it.
