VANCOUVER, Wash. (KOIN 6) — Evergreen Public School District officials said one of the district’s elementary schools is closed until Monday morning after a high number of students and staff has become sick with a gastrointestinal illness.

Clark County Public Health asked the district to close Columbia Valley Elementary until Monday morning to prevent the spread of the virus that has sickened about 73 students and staff.

The elementary school closed at 3:35 p.m. Thursday, and all activities and events were canceled, including any weekend use of the building, school district officials said.

A deep cleaning will be done at the school, and parents of students at Columbia Valley Elementary were asked to monitor their children’s health.

School district officials said parents should ensure their children are symptom-free for 48 hours before returning to class, even after the school is reopened.

“Evergreen Public Schools takes the health and safety of our students and staff very seriously, so while we are missing a class day tomorrow [Friday], we need to ensure this illness does not continue to spread,” district officials said in a written statement.

Information about the virus, as well as other cleaning information, is posted on Evergreen Public Schools web site.
