VANCOUVER, Wash. (KOIN 6) – A man is in police custody Monday after allegedly bringing a shotgun into a Washington medical facility.
Authorities learned of the suspect, 39-year-old Gregory Castro, when a 911 call came in around 10 a.m. alerting officers to an armed man inside a Kaiser Permanente building just north of the main medical campus.
Officers said Monday that when it was discovered Castro had a gun, mass evacuations occurred. Police were initially concerned Castro had taken a hostage after a doctor remained inside the evacuated building.
SWAT was requested to respond, but the doctor emerged from the building before their arrival, police said.
The doctor told police that Castro had been armed and intended to have the police kill him.
Negotiators from the Crisis Negotiation Team were able to establish communication with Castro and convinced him to surrender peacefully, police said.
Castro was taken into custody and later booked into the Clark County Jail for one count of assault in the first degree, one count of unlawful possession of a firearm and one count of theft of a firearm.
