PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Portland area search and rescue teams spent Sunday training at Multnomah Falls.

Teams spent the day rappelling down cliffs and hiking the trails to get use to the terrain. Officials said training together helps the teams work better in dangerous conditions when they are often called to the falls to find missing hikers.

“We frequently get calls out here at Multnomah Falls, so they’re out here trying to learn some of the trails, some of the hazards in the daylight conditions, because most of our searches unfortunately are at night,” said Multnomah County Sheriff Scott McDowell.

Search teams also brought along trash bags during their training to help the Forest Service clean up the falls.
