PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A family was able to evacuate their SE Portland home early Sunday when it caught on fire, but their three pets did not survive.
Firefighters said they were dispatched to 2340 SE 113th Avenue at 8:30 a.m. and arrived to find the home at the address on fire.
The family was already out of the home but told firefighters their three cats were still inside.
Crews said one cat was found early on. They attempted to revive it with a special pet resuscitator but failed. The two other cats were later found dead in a back bedroom, crews said.
Members from the Trauma Intervention Program, which is a non-profit group of specially trained citizen volunteers who provide immediate emotional and practical support to people after a traumatic event, were called out to assist the family.
Crews said Red Cross was also called to assist with housing.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
