PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) – The Portland Police Bureau released information Friday on the arrest of a man they suspect raped a stranger near the Steel Bridge last month.

Clarence Williams, 47, is accused of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old woman near the stairs at the east end of the bridge March 11. Williams also stole the woman’s bank cards, according to police.

The woman called 911 after the alleged rape, leading PPB sex crime detectives to launch an investigation into the suspect, later identified as Williams.

Williams, a registered sex offender, was arrested just before 5 p.m. Wednesday at SW 5th Ave. and Burnside St. He was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of Rape in the First Degree, Robbery in the First Degree, Robbery in the Third Degree, and Aggravated Identity Theft and was arraigned Thursday.

The Portland Police Bureau works with the Sexual Assault Resource Center of Oregon (SARC) and we want you to know that you need not be alone as a survivor of a sexual assault. SARC has a 24-hour support line at (503) 640-5311.
