PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Four officers with the Portland Police Bureau are heading to Peru for two weeks in an ongoing training session for the Peruvian National Police.

The PPB officers  — Sgt. Don Livingston. Officer Ryan Foote, Sgt. Jose Gonzalez and Officer Chad Gradwahl — will train members of the Peruvian police who will then train local officers.

The training session was developed by members of the PPB and Portland Fire & Rescue who volunteered for the Global Mission Readiness. GMR began in 2009 to train first responders and officers around the world.

Only about 1000 members of the 100,000 member Peruvian National Police will qualify to be trained for this elite unit, officials with PPB said in a release.

Lima, the capital of Peru, is a city of 8.5 million people.

The trip is paid for through donations and fundraising efforts.
