PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Shoppers who quickly called 911 after seeing large amounts of black smoke pour out of the Lloyd Center on Sunday learned the smoke was part of an annual test.
Firefighters responded to the Macy’s store at the Lloyd Center after receiving reports that black smoke was pouring out of the top of the store.
The smoke ended up being part of the mall’s annual test of the building’s furnace. However, Portland Fire and Rescue responder Tommy Schroeder said they didn’t take any chances.
“We had crews allocated to the roof to investigate where the fire was coming from, crews interior to check boiler and mechanical rooms. (We had) firefighters getting ready in case there was a true emergency that needed to be abated,” said Schroeder.
Portland Fire and Rescue responders said anything that looks suspicious or dangerous should be called in even if it ends up being a false alarm in the end.
