CLARK COUNTY, Ore. (KOIN) — Commissioners in Clark County approved a budget on Wednesday that allows the sheriff to hire new deputies.

The county is using $1 million from the county’s health insurance plan to hire eight new deputies for the first time in seven years.

Commissioners said the county is still running a deficit and there are concerns it won’t be able to keep paying for the deputies.

The sheriff said he is still 24 deputies short of a full staff.
