PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The 22-year-old man charged with murder for the death of his uncle pleaded not guilty to one count of murder Tuesday in a Multnomah County courtroom as his bereaved family members looked on.
Matthew Galen Bigboy is accused of killing his uncle, 61-year-old Eugene Bigboy, allegedly in a blackout rage.
On March 10, the body of Eugene Bigboy was found inside his apartment in the 5800 block of Northeast Center Commons Way after officers conducted a welfare check.
“It’s been hard,” said Eugene Bigboy’s daughter, who would not be named for privacy reasons.
Police originally believed Eugene Bigboy died of natural causes after his body was found face down inside his apartment because friends said his health was declining.
Matthew Bigboy became a suspect in his uncle’s death after an autopsy ruled the death was not natural. He was arrested March 16, 2014 in Northeast Portland.
Matthew Bigboy eventually confessed to police and wrote a letter expressing remorse for killing his uncle, according to court documents.
The trial is scheduled to start in May but will likely be remanded to a later date. In the mean time, Bigboy will remain in jail.
