PORTLAND, Ore. – KOIN — It’s like football, but on steroids — and the hard-hitting sport is back in Portland.

Arena football returns Monday night for the first time since 1999 as the Portland Thunder take on the San Jose Sabercats at the Moda Center.

Two-time assistant coach Matthew Sauk will be leading the charge.

“This first game’s going to be exciting to see how we did recruiting-wise,” he said.

The Thunder lay claim to not one, but two Arena Football League rookie quarterbacks: Darron Thomas of the Oregon Ducks and Idaho’s Nathan Enderle.

“I fully expect both guys to play,” said Sauk.

“If I just had a veteran, I think I’d try to stick with that veteran, but I’d like to be able to use both quarterbacks at some point and get them both some game experience.”

Other specialists on the Thunder include pass-rusher Donte Paige-Moss and nose guard Jake McDonough.

The game kicks off Monday night at 7 p.m.
