Gusty winds, rains down trees in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) –Heavy rainfall and gusting winds brought down trees and knocked out power throughout the Portland metro area Thursday morning.

A large tree crashed down onto a Firestone Tire shop in Northwest Portland. Sometime before 5 a.m. the tree fell across the street and came to rest on the building at West Burnside Street and Northwest Park Avenue.

Richard Faber with the Portland City Nature Urban Forestry Division confirmed to KOIN in an email that heavy rain and strong wind likely caused the tree to uproot. There were no reported injuries. Crews were on scene to remove the tree and assess the damage.

In Tigard, trees came down at Southwest Hall Boulevard and Bonita Road, closing the intersection.

Meanwhile, in Lake Oswego, a tree fell across the 600 block of A Avenue near Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. There were no reported injuries or serious damage.

Power outages forced Clackamas Community College to cancel all its dayside classes. The school was unsure if any of its nightside classes would have to be canceled as well.

A wind advisory was in effect through 3 p.m.
