PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Clatsop County District Attorney is looking into allegations of misconduct surrounding the man now accused of beating a 2-year-old boy in a Southeast Portland motel Tuesday night. The boy died late Thursday afternoon.
Joshua Howard, 28, is the boyfriend of the child’s mother and is currently facing a first-degree assault charge.
He remains in custody at the Multnomah County Jail on charges of attempted aggravated murder, attempted murder, first-degree assault and first-degree criminal mistreatment. The Multnomah District Attorney’s Office will present the case to a Grand Jury next week with additional charges including aggravated murder.
Around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Howard called 911 from the Unicorn Motel at 3040 SE 82nd Ave. to report the boy was unconscious. Paramedics arrived and performed life-saving CPR on the child before he was transported to a Portland hospital.
The child passed away around 5 p.m. Thursday evening.
Howard was arrested by the Portland police and pleaded not guilty on Thursday, before the boy died.
“We are looking into allegations of misconduct that may have occurred in late December in Clatsop County regarding Mr. Howard,” DA Josh Marquis told KOIN 6 News.
Clatsop County deputy chief Brad Johnson told KOIN 6 News the Portland police are the lead investigators in the Unicorn Motel case.
