PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — At Covington Middle School in the Evergreen School District, a book called “It’s Perfectly Normal” is available for students to check out.
The book, around for nearly 20 years, has gotten high marks from literary critics. It deals the changes kids bodies go through and sex, and is aimed at ages 10 and up.
But it gives a lot of detailed information about puberty and sex and shows explicit cartoon illustrations of sexual activity.
One parent named Russ who contacted KOIN 6 News is not happy this book is available for kids to read without parental approval.
The district does have a policy regarding elementary students. But older kids — like middle schoolers — can decide for themselves.
Russ is not sure yet how he and some other concerned parents will try to get the book removed or monitored. But he wants something done.
The Evergreen district said the first place to start is with the school principal. A challenge could go all the way to the school board.
That hasn’t happened in two years.
Some Beaverton and Portland middle school libraries also have the book.
