HILLSBORO, Ore. (KOIN) — The man accused of killing his girlfriend’s 4-year-old son in 2012 pleaded guilty to manslaughter Tuesday.
Brian Canady faced murder and abuse charges in the death of Zachary Dutro. Canady and the boy’s mother, Jessica Dutro, were both arrested in August 2012.
At that time Tigard police launched an investigation after Zachary was taken to a local hospital with injuries described by police at the time as life-threatening.
The child passed awhile while receiving medical treatment at the hospital.
An autopsy performed by the Oregon State Medical Examiner revealed the child died from “blunt force abdominal trauma.”
Canady told police he kicked the child in the abdomen and refused to take the child to the doctor afterwards, court documents state. Detectives learned Canady was afraid doctors would discover the abuse.
Despite his guilty plea, Canady will not be sentenced until after the case against Jessica Dutro is completed.
Dutro is charged with murder, five counts of murder by abuse and second-degree assault – suggesting she had more involvement in her son’s death than originally thought. Dutro was originally arrested on one count of manslaughter.
