PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Portland State University professors held a rally Thursday morning to protest the stalled contract negotiations with the administration.
The demonstration began at 11 a.m. at the South Park Blocks near the Smith Memorial Student Union. This comes after the faculty union declared an impasse Monday following 10 months of negotiations.
As part of the rally, students walked out of class in a show of solidarity.
The sticking points in the negotiations include tenure, pay and academic cuts. According to the Associated Press, PSU administrators have been trying to reduce a projected a $15 million budget shortfall for 2014-15. Steps already taken include a two-year pay freeze for administrators who make six figures and plans to eliminate a subsidy for the football team.
The American Association of University Professors of Portland State represents about 1,200 faculty members. If no deal is reached, the next step would be a possible strike.
