PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) –The body of a 41-year-old kayaker who fell into the water near Sauvie Island Friday afternoon was found late Friday night by searchers.

The man, Dim Dy, and his 27-year-old companion both fell in near the Gilbert River boat ramps. The younger man made it to shore, but during the search authorities were less convinced this man would be rescued.

By nightfall, the rescue effort continued on land, but in the water search crews began the recovery process.

The darkness “makes it more difficult” to search, Lt. Dustin Hald Hald with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said.

The 27-year-old man was rushed to the hospital in serious condition with hypothermia. The water is less than 50 degrees, authorities said.
