TIGARD, Ore. (KOIN) – A blaze last week at a dental lab in Tigard was accidentally caused, fire officials said Wednesday.
Tualatin Valley & Fire investigators determined the fire was caused by a bathroom fan that caught fire and then got detached and ignited other material. The damage to the commercial building, which houses three businesses, is estimated at $1.5 million.
The Feb. 13 blaze was reported at about 5:30 a.m. at Excel Orthodontics, located at 15995 SW 74th Ave..
A Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue spokesperson said crews did not see immediate signs of a fire on arrival, but when they forced open the doors of the lab, they found active flames from the floor to the ceiling, along with thick black smoke.
Due to the heavy smoke, crews had to use a thermal imaging camera to navigate inside the building. A bulk of the flames was in an attic space the three businesses share. The fire caused the roof to buckle, but firefighters were able to contain the blaze before the roof collapsed. There was a risk because the office contains dental equipment and material that is highly flammable.
There were no reported injuries.
All three businesses were damaged, especially in the roof and attic area.
