PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Mayor Charlie Hales re-iterated his support for the Mounted Patrol after its supporters felt duped by a city commissioner.
When City Commissioner Steve Novick sent a memo to other commissioners calling the Portland Mounted Patrol “largely ornamental,” it didn’t sit well with the group trying to raise money to keep it viable.
The group, Friends of the Mounted Patrol, thought they had a deal with City Hall to keep the unit going for at least one more year.
“We have an agreement with Friends of the Mounted Patrol that they’ll raise funds to help support this,” Hales told KOIN 6 News Wednesday, “and I don’t want to break that agreement.”
He added the Mounted Patrol is not going away any time soon.
