SALEM, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon bill aimed at reducing underage drinking deaths moves a step closer to a vote Monday when a state House committee meets to work on the measure.

The law would provide limited amnesty for underage drinkers seeking medical aid for themselves or others for drinking too much. It would give protection from an alcohol possession citation if the evidence came as a result of their seeking help.

Supporters say underage drinking results in thousands of deaths each year and fear of legal trouble can keep minors from seeking help that could save lives.

Monday’s work session will consider changes requested by opponents of the bill to clarify its language.

Similar laws have been enacted in 17 states, including Washington.
