One killed in I-5 crash near Ridgefield

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A pileup crash involving 27 cars closed Interstate 5 in both directions near Battle Ground, Wash. Thursday morning, leaving one person dead and several critically hurt.

The crash occurred before 11 a.m. between Ridgefield and Battle Ground. According to Washington State Police Trooper Steve Schatzel, one person was killed, another was critically hurt and two more suffered serious injuries.

Matthew Scott of Tualatin died. He was 39.

I-5 was closed between Ridgefield and Battle Ground in both directions through 12:30 p.m. By 1:45 p.m., the northbound freeway was completely opened, while only one southbound lane was open. According to WSDOT, southbound traffic was backed up 10 miles, all the way to Woodland.

Meanwhile, a pileup had also shut down I-5 south near Albany, Ore. One lane was reopened at 1 p.m., allowing traffic to snake through.
