PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man who accidentally shot himself in the testicles during a robbery gone wrong near a downtown Portland Safeway Tuesday night has been arrested.

Forty-year-old Joseph Johnson was released from the hospital and taken into custody on charges of first-degree assault, first-degree robbery and felon in possession of a firearm.

According to Portland police, Johnson attempted to rob 32-year-old Jordan Merrell in the parking lot of an apartment building at Southwest 9th Avenue and Columbia Street. Both Johnson and Merrell were residents of the building and knew each other well, police learned.

Johnson shot Merrell in the leg while stealing his wallet, police say. Merrell then ran to the nearby Safeway store to get help. Officers searched the area and found Johnson with a gunshot wound at 6th Avenue and Mill Street. They also seized a handgun from him.

Merrell continues to recover from his serious leg injury at a Portland hospital.

Johnson will be arraigned Thursday afternoon in Multnomah County Court.
