PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An anti-coal coalition held a news conference Thursday urging Gov. John Kitzhaber to deny a project planned in Oregon.
The “Power Past Coalition” wants the governor to uphold the state’s air quality laws and prohibit coal trains from polluting rivers and streams.
They emphasized their point with giant helium-filled balloons that lifted a giants sign directed at Kitzhaber.
One of the protesters, Rev. Kate Lore of the First Unitarian Church, noted Kitzhaber is also a doctor. “You (Kitzhaber) understand the significant health risks associated with mining and shipping coal,” she said.
They also protested a proposal to use the Port of Morrow to export US coal to Asia.
