(KOIN) – Emergency responders found a bullet protruding from a man’s neck after he accidentally shot himself with a handgun Sunday afternoon in Yamhill, Ore.

The Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office reports that the 52-year-old man was showing the .45 caliber Colt black powder pistol to a friend when he dropped it as he was pulling it out of a leather holster and it discharged.

According to the sheriff’s office, the bullet entered the man’s abdomen and traveled up through his body before lodging itself in his neck. The shooting occurred in the 21000 block of Northeast Fairdale Road.

Two friends who had emergency medical technician training treated him until paramedics arrived.  He was transported to Willamette Valley Medical Center and underwent emergency surgery. At last report Monday, he was in good condition. He is expected to make a full recovery.
