GRESHAM, Ore. (KOIN) – Rain, slick roads and gusty wind all were factors in a rollover crash that killed a girl Sunday afternoon, the driver — through his roommate — told KOIN 6 News.
Yoselyn Escobar-Vargas died in the crash. She was 11 years old.
The roommate said the driver is in shock from the accident that happened around 4 p.m. Sunday on the ramp to westbound I-84 from NE 181st Avenue in Gresham.
That ramp has seen other accidents where vehicles slammed into the concrete barriers in the 270-degree turn. For example, on May 17 a semi-truck collided with a car coming off the final turn (included in the video clip below). That crash closed one lane of the I-84 freeway for an hour.
Interstate 84 stayed open after Sunday’s fatal crash, but the ramp was closed for several hours.
There were four adults and five children in the van headed for a church service at the First Church of the Nazarene in Southwest Portland. The van belongs to the Salvados congregation, the pastor told KOIN 6 News.
The pastor also said road conditions were a factor in the crash.
All of the other vehicle occupants have been treated and released from the hospital.
