PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Since Tuesday, the DEQ received 120 complaints from residents living in and around North Portland’s Arbor Lodge neighborhood of a mysterious chemical odor, 70 of them coming Thursday night.
Many people complained of headaches, nausea and burning eyes as a result of the odor. Some, like Michael Gilmore, worried it was a natural gas leak.
“Nothing that strong enough to give me a headache, but I definitely had to check it wasn’t a gas smell,” he said.
Resident Mike Zimmerman described the chemical as almost a sulfuric odor.
At this point, DEQ investgators can’t pinpoint what exactly the smell is or where it’s coming from. Officials are checking with all the buildings in the area on the island, as the neighborhood overlooks this area from a bluff.
Most of the people in the neighborhood are keeping their windows and screen doors shut until the chemical odor is identified.
The odor was not pervasive Friday night.
