PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – In a bizarre robbery early Wednesday morning, a 17-year-old boy armed with a machete reportedly stole a man’s headphones on a Southeast Portland road before returning them moments later.
The robbery occurred just before 2 a.m. on Southeast 159th Avenue and Main Street.
The victim, 21-year-old Adam Hampton, told Portland police that he was walking along 159th Avenue when a black Ford Expedition pulled up alongside him and the suspect got out, armed with a machete, and demanded Hampton’s headphones.
Hampton gave him the headphones, and the suspect then got back into the Expedition and drove away. Hampton told investigators that after he called 911, the SUV drove back up to him and a different male got out. That person returned the headphones to Hampton, apologized, and then got back into the vehicle and drove away again.
Portland police report that responding officers were able to locate the Expedition, which had six occupants. Police arrested 17-year-old Javier Coyt and seized a machete from the vehicle.
Coyt was lodged in the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center on one count of first-degree robbery.
