HAZEL DELL, Wash. (KOIN) — A homeless camp in Hazel Dell is back in operation.
It’s the same place where a young teen was raped and murdered four years ago. The camp, along NE 13th Avenue near 78th Street in Hazel Dell, has already been cleaned up twice.
Neighbors told KOIN 6 News there are constant problems because of the campers in these woods. On Thursday, deputies took action.
Clark County sheriff’s deputies arrested James Dayton, wanted on a felony warrant for assault, at the camp Thursday.
“You’re on private property,” the deputies warned him. “If you come back here, you’re going to be arrested.”
The 51-year-old was handcuffed and taken to Clark County jail.
Deputies then asked the woman he was living with to clear out, but said they’ll give her some time to do that.
“The deputy will come back and check in a few days to see if she’s moved out,” said Commander Steve Shea with the sheriff’s office.
In 2009 a sex offender living at the camp killed a 13-year-old girl using the field as a shortcut home from school.
In May, KOIN 6 News visited the property to follow efforts to tear down the shanty town. Deputies thought it remained under control — until KOIN 6 News contacted them Thursday morning.
“That’s the first I’ve heard of it,” Shea said.
Clark County deputies took a walk through the woods Thursday, to find it littered with mattresses, furniture, clothes, carts and beer cans. And those campers on the grounds were issued this stern warning:
“You’re trespassing. If you don’t get out of there, I’m going to come in and arrest you. So get out now.”
Deputies said they are going to increase patrols in the woods to try to keep the campers out.
