PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man armed with a handgun walked into the emergency room at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Southwest Portland Thursday morning but was talked out of harming anyone by a nurse.
The man, Joseph Spina, entered the ER around 7:15 a.m., said Sgt. Bob Ray of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. He was pointing the gun at himself and demanding drugs.
But a nurse told authorities she talked to the man and said she was not comfortable treating him while he had the gun.
Hospital security detained him and took his weapon, Ray said. No shots were fired and there were no reported injuries.
Spina is being held at the Washington County Jail on $250,000 bail. He faces charges of first-degree robbery, unlawful use of a weapon, harassment and menacing.
