PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man presumed drowned in the Columbia River remains missing Tuesday night.

Witnesses saw him jump in the water Sunday near the Red Lion Hotel at the Quay in Vancouver. Two teen girls on a nearby riverbank jumped in to try to save him, but by the time they reached him “he was really far under,” one of the girls said. The man did not resurface.

Crews searched for him in the water into the night Sunday. As of Tuesday a search spokesperson told KOIN 6 News that crews will continue to search this area of the river, but won’t be out in force. He said searches will be conducted from “time to time.”

The man is believed to be in his 20s. A bike, shoes and a shirt were found abandoned at the scene, and are believed to be his.

Witnesses told KOIN 6 News the man was swimming in the Columbia River when a boat passed by. The man reportedly moved out of the way so the boat could get out into the river, but immediately began having trouble swimming.

“I heard this guy saying ‘help,’” said one witness, who described this as being around the time when the boat passed by.

Witnesses said the boat then sped away, and the man swimming in the river went under.
