LONGVIEW, Wash. (KOIN) — Neighbors in Longview are outraged over an illegal dumping ground they say is polluting a local wetlands area.
The area at Highway 432 and Memorial Park Drive — just off State Route 432 — is filled with garbage, used needles and old furniture. It runs along a waterway that empties directly into the Columbia River and because of that, this is potentially more than an eyesore.
“It gets in the ground, maybe in our water. Who knows?” said Angie Yoder, who lives near the dumping ground. “It’s gross.”
Brett Duling with the Cowlitz County Search & Rescue and Dive Team told KOIN 6 News they have to dive and search in these places.
“The way drugs are going through here, people just don’t care. They just dump it every where. They’ll just drive by and throw it out,” he said.
Duling, who also lives near the dumping area, said it’s “disappointing, kind of disgusting really. It isn’t right. People shouldn’t be dumping that stuff.”
The problem belongs to Cowlitz County. After a KOIN 6 News story, county workers came to inspect the situation and said they’ll be back on Friday to clean it up.
Nearby residents don’t care who cleans it up — just as long as it is cleaned up soon. The neighbors also want to see more than just posted signs, too.
“I think they should step up and patrol it more and really discourage people more,” Yoder said.
