DALLAS, Ore. (KOIN) — A lawnmower hit some rocks and ignited a brush fire that destroyed a family vineyard in Polk County.
The fire began around 1:15 p.m. Saturday off Highway 22. Authorities believe it started with the lawnmower’s resulting spark.
More than 30 acres were torched as the fire tore through the private winery. Note that this is lower than the original estimate of 100 acres. About half the vineyard, still being developed, was destroyed along with acres of brush and trees.
A helicopter dumped water from above and 30 engines from a dozen agencies battled the blaze. The fire was brought under control after about four hours.
No one was hurt and Highway 22 was never closed. There was one fenderbender from a driver looking at the fire and not paying attention to the road.
