WILSONVILLE, Ore. (KOIN) — Despite initial information a man was being sought for trying to abduct a 3-year-old from a rest stop along I-5, the Oregon State Police late Friday night said the case is now being investigated as an assault on a woman walking with her daughter in that area.

Around 5 p.m., police said, the woman and her daughter were walking in a wooded area behind the Baldock Rest Area on southbound I-5 near Wilsonville.

The 33-year-old Salem woman told authorities she stopped in Wilsonville on personal business then went to the rest area for a brief stop. The front side of the rest stop was very busy, she told police, so she pulled around to the back.

She and her daughter got out for a brief walk when, she said, she was struck from behind, then repeatedly hit by a man who tried to strangle her.

The man simply stopped and fled. The child was not hurt.

The suspect being sought is a white man of unknown age, about 5-feet-10 with a medium build. He wore faded, dirty dark pants and a short-sleeve shirt. It’s believed his hair is brown and cut above the collar.

Officers from OSP, Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, Wilsonville Police Department, and Canby Police Department all worked on the initial investigation and search.

The investigation continues.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Oregon State Police at either 800.452.7888 or 503.731.3030.
