Fans unhappy over Moda Center name

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Say goodbye to the Rose Garden. Say hello to the Moda Center.

The medical and dental insurance provider with corporate offices in the Rose City secured the naming rights to the Rose Garden. But until now, many people had never heard of the company.

People who spoke with KOIN 6 News are beginning to learn more about them, but they’re not quite ready to give up using Rose Garden as the name for the Trail Blazers’ home.

Among the reactions from people who learned the venue will now be called Moda Center:

“Oh, that’s lame. That’s just sad.”

“What is that?”

“I dont even know what that is. Is that like a company?”

“I’ve grown up here 20 years. It’s just always been the Rose Garden.”

“I don’t even know what that means.”

It actually has a meaning from Latin, said Moda Health president Dr. William Johnson.

“We were formally ODS, and as we began to expand our organization and our footprint; to go from a local company to more of a regional company, we looked at different opportunities and we rebranded the organization,” Johnson said. “The reason why we focused on Moda, is because Moda is derived from the Latin word motus, which means ‘The Way.’ It goes back to the way to be more, the way to be better, the way to better health.”

But for hundreds of people who posted on the KOIN Facebook page, the response included words like horrible, dumb, booooo, are you kidding me?

For citizens, sentiment and semantics make the name change a bit hard to swallow.

One fan said, “I understand modern day business and they have an opportunity to make some money. Why not? I just don’t know who Moda is.”

And one person, when asked if this is a good move or a bad move, was direct. “It was bad. Very bad.”
