PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Fliers that claim people with disabilities threaten democracy have been distributed around Portland neighborhoods, prompting an investigation by the Office of Equity and Human Rights.
The writer of the flier claims the disabled threaten democracy by accepting government benefits while voting. The flier also threatens to make public those with disabilities in these neighborhoods so the community can judge whether these people are truly disabled.
Robert Ridgway, who received a flier, said the writer is misinformed.
“These are people that are so on the fringe they don’t even know what they’re talking about,” he told KOIN 6 News.
The Office of Equity and Human Rights in Portland wants anyone who finds a flier to report it so they can track the writer’s efforts.
“The concern is things like this can empower someone to take an action,” said the agency’s Patrick Philpott.
