Police: Craigslist car scammer caught

(KOIN) – A 22-year-old man wanted for stealing a vehicle and then selling it through Craigslist to an unsuspecting Vancouver couple last year is under arrest.

Portland police report that Lucas Dean Weisensee was taken into custody Wednesday in the 2400 block of Northeast 28th Avenue.

On Oct. 10, 2012, a 2005 Toyota Scion was stolen from outside a residence in the 2000 block of Northeast 27th Avenue. Later that same day, A Vancouver couple responding to a Craigslist ad for the Scion met a man at the Jantzen Beach Shopping Center and purchased the car for $5,800 in cash.

They found out the car had been reported stolen when they tried to register it. The victims took a photo of the suspect at the time of the sale, Portland police said. Then, an anonymous Crime Stoppers tip lead to the identification of Weisensee as the seller.

Weisensee was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on counts of computer crime, first-degree forgery, identity theft, first-degree possession of a forged instrument, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, first-degree theft, trafficking of a stolen motor vehicle and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

He was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.
