(KOIN) – A 56-year-old man drowned while body surfing with a friend on a Lincoln City area beach Wednesday night.
Rescuers found the man unresponsive about 200 yards from shore. They attempted CPR on him before transporting him to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital, where he was pronounced dead after 9 p.m. He was later identified as 56-year-old Kerry Eugene Bamford of Pasco, Wash.
According to Oregon State Police (OSP), a friend of Bamford spotted him about 100 yards from shore trying to swim back to the beach before he lost sight of him. The friend notified onlookers, who called 911. North Lincoln Fire & Rescue District No. 1 responded and deployed two jet skis, which located him.
Lincoln County Medical Examiner and OSP are investigating.
