Search crews reached the boy early Wednesday morning. He was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to a Portland-area hospital around 3 a.m. Officials said the boy has substantial injuries. He was in serious condition as of Wednesday afternoon.

According to Hood River dispatch, the dad called 911 at 9:06 p.m. The sheriff’s office put a plane up and found their location by zoning in on a camp fire the father built to help rescuers find their location.

The two were reportedly hiking a trail near the White River West Sno-Park when the boy fell. They were about 3 miles up the trail from the White River West Sno-Park parking lot.
