PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A 32-year-old Randle, Wash., man who provided an elaborate story to explain his fiancée’s killing last week has now been charged in her murder.

Corey R. Morgan told Lewis County Sheriff’s detectives that he and his fiancée, 48-year-old Brenda Lee Bail of Chehalis, were jumped by three men on a rural U.S. Forest Service road outside of Morton early Friday morning while visiting “their special spot.”

Morgan told detectives that he fought off the men using tae kwon do, and then crashed a pickup truck into an embankment as the couple escaped. Morgan claimed that the collision caused Bail to hit her head on the dashboard and lose consciousness.

Morgan then allegedly ran two miles to the nearest house, where he asked the homeowner to call 911.

Morgan identified 39-year-old Roger Etter of Kelso as one of the assaulters. However, deputies interviewed Etter and determined he had nothing to do with the incident.

Detectives also discovered a history of domestic violence between Morgan and Bail.

An autopsy determined that Bail died of asphyxiation caused by manual strangulation, with contributing factors of blunt force trauma to the face, the sheriff’s office said. There were no injuries consistent with any collision.

Morgan was booked into the Lewis County Jail on one count of second-degree murder. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.
