MADRAS, Ore. (KOIN) — A 91-year-old California man driving a rented car was one of two people who died in a head-on collision Friday in Jefferson County.
Around 5:30 p.m., a group of cars began passing a truck along Highway 97 near milepost 89. Among the passing vehicles was a rented Subaru driven by Warren Chester Ward, who state troopers believe slammed head-on into a Ford Explorer.
Both the Subaru and the Explorer ended up off the road and a small fire in the Subaru was quickly put out.
Ward died at the scene, as did the driver of the Explorer, 71-year-old Harold Curtis from Antelope, Ore. Curtis’ passenger, 68-year-old Elizabeth Samul, was injured but is expected to survive.
