PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A group is pushing for the formation of an independent utility board to run Portland’s water and sewer services — in the hopes of lowering bills for Portland water customers.

“Portlanders for Water Reform” have filed a ballot initiative that could create the independent utility board.

The director of the Portland Water Bureau has said that while water and sewer rates have gone up, Portland bills are in the middle of the pack compared to surrounding cities.

The “Portlanders for Water Reform” group hopes to get 30,000 signatures to put the measure on the May 2014 ballot.
