ENTERPRISE, Ore. (AP) — A former deputy sheriff in Eastern Oregon has been jailed on an assault charge after the shooting of a relative.

A statement from the district attorney’s office in Wallowa County says 53-year-old Randy E. Dickenson of La Grande was shot at least once Sunday night and is in critical condition.

The suspect is identified as 47-year-old Daniel Kent Courtney. The statement says he lives on the property near Enterprise where the shooting followed a dispute.

Sheriff Steve Rogers asked the State Police to lead the investigation because Courtney had previously been a deputy in the sheriff’s office.

The statement says Dickenson and Courtney are related but doesn’t say how.
